Historical dance deals with the various dance forms of past centuries. Based on dance descriptions, preserved historical textbooks, pictures and other historical reports the practice, experience and enjoyment of dance come to life again as it was created by European culture over time in all its variety. Historical dance includes such different dance forms and styles as the French basse danse of the Late Middle Ages,

the Italian balli of the 15th and 16th centuries, pavanes and galliards, branles and English country dances, as well as the minuet from the court of Louis XIV, Viennese contredanses and quadrilles, Ländler, waltzes and the Charleston. These dance forms reflect the aesthetics and the life style of an epoch in the same way that fashion, art and architecture do.

'Tanz durch die Jahrhunderte'

'Tanz durch die Jahrhunderte' (Dance through the Ages) is an amateur dancing group whose

members not only like to dance, but also regard costumes as an important and vital part of the

whole experience of historical dancing. The group was founded by Lilo Grimm-Cresswell. For

more than 15 years they have come together for weekly dance sessions, have organized

weekend workshops and performed on stage in historical costumes. They do not restrict

themselves to one single period, but, as the name of the group signifies, apply themselves to

dances from several periods: Baroque, Rococo and the 19th century.
